Set in semi-isolation against an organic ground of near-monotone complexity, two brushstrokes assert themselves as voices—at times in dialogue, at times in competition. The work reflects a sustained fascination with the depth of complexity that can be discovered within a single mark or gesture. Initially conceived under the working title 2 Stroke, the identities Bass and Contralto emerged through the process, naming the strokes as distinct yet interdependent presences within the composition.
